Playstation 3…D?

3d ps3It’s no secret that gaming is evolving like a frog at Chernobyl, and it seems that 3D technology is going to be gaming’s next step in its evolutionary journey starting with the Playstation 3.

At this year’s Berlin IFA, Germany’s answer to E3, Sony showed off the PS3’s futuristic racing game Wipeout being played in full 3D technology and 1080p high-definition clarity on a prototype Bravia TV, which should hopefully be on store shelves by the end of 2010.

What’s cool about this new TV is that you don’t need to buy special versions of the game to experience the bone breaking of Tekken 6 or cringe when you get caught in Zangief’s Ultimate Atomic Buster in Street Fighter IV — it all lies within a special LCD picture processing technology which means that all PS3 games can be played in 3D.  That’s the catch: the tech needs computer generated images to work, so movies and TV shows won’t work, and you do need to wear the 3D glasses.

Still interested, but are not willing drop the cash to get that in your face action?  Sony also announced that it wants to incorporate the 3D tech into the Playstation 3 itself, which would work on any hi-def TV, but no definite time has been set for these new systems.

Is Sony on the right track here with the introduction of 3D gaming, or will the idea just shrivel up and die?  What do you think?
